What Can Junk Removal Companies Actually Take? (Westchester Edition)

It's a fair question. You're standing in your garage looking at fifteen years of accumulated stuff and you're genuinely not sure if any of it is off-limits. Paint cans? Old TVs? That broken hot tub that's been growing moss since 2018? Here's the honest rundown — what we take, what we can't, and what to do when something falls in the gray zone.

The Easy Stuff — Yes, We Take It

Furniture. Couches, recliners, sectionals, beds, dressers, bookshelves, dining sets — all of it. Doesn't matter if it's falling apart or just ugly. If it's furniture, it's going. The one caveat: if it's actively infested with bed bugs or vermin, we need to know ahead of time. That changes how we handle it, but we still take it.

Appliances. Refrigerators, washing machines, dryers, dishwashers, stoves, window AC units, water heaters — yes. Refrigerators and AC units contain refrigerant, which has to be properly recovered before disposal. We handle that. You don't need to do anything special. Just tell us when you book so we come prepared.

Electronics. TVs — including those big old tube TVs that weigh 200 pounds — computers, monitors, printers, stereos, game consoles, whatever. New York State actually has pretty strict rules about e-waste going to landfills, and Westchester County has solid e-waste infrastructure. Your old electronics get processed properly, not just tossed in a dumpster.

Yard waste and outdoor stuff. Brush, branches, old lumber, broken fencing, outdoor furniture, gas grills (tanks removed — we can't take propane), lawn equipment, bags of leaves that somehow never made it to the curb. If it lived outside and you want it gone, we can usually take it.

Construction debris. Flooring, drywall, tiles, sinks, toilets, cabinets, lumber — the stuff left over after a renovation. This is heavy material, so volume pricing applies based on weight as well as space. But yes, we take it. A lot of people don't realize junk removal companies handle this.

Hot tubs. Yep. It takes a crew and some time to break one down, but we've done it plenty of times. Old hot tubs are actually one of the most satisfying things to haul out — homeowners are always thrilled to see that thing finally disappear. We disassemble it on-site and haul it in pieces.

Mattresses. We take mattresses without any drama. Westchester County has mattress recycling programs, and we use them. Your mattress doesn't just end up in a pile somewhere.

The Stuff We Can't Take — and Why

This is where things get a little more complicated, but it's not as long a list as you might think.

Hazardous materials. Paint — latex or oil-based — is the big one. We get asked about this constantly. We can't take open or partially-used paint cans. Same goes for stains, varnishes, solvents, and wood strippers. These are considered household hazardous waste, and they have to go through proper channels. The good news: Westchester County makes this pretty easy.

Propane tanks. Full or even "empty" tanks need to go through a proper disposal or exchange program. A hardware store exchange, or your local propane supplier. Don't hand these to a junk removal company — any junk removal company.

Motor oil, gasoline, and automotive fluids. Gas stations and auto parts stores typically accept these. Call ahead to confirm.

Pesticides, herbicides, and pool chemicals. Same category as the paint — household hazardous waste. Can't go in a regular disposal facility.

Asbestos-containing materials. This sometimes comes up with older homes in Westchester. If you suspect something contains asbestos — old floor tiles, pipe insulation, ceiling materials — get it tested first. Removal has to be done by a licensed abatement contractor. We're not that.

What to Do With the Can't-Takes in Westchester

Westchester County actually has one of the better household hazardous waste programs in the state. The Westchester County Department of Public Works runs HHW collection events throughout the year where you can drop off paint, chemicals, batteries, and similar items at no charge to county residents. Check their website for current event dates and locations.

For electronics specifically, the county runs year-round e-waste drop-off. Many municipalities have their own collection points too — Ossining and Peekskill both have local programs worth checking out. Mount Vernon residents can use the city's scheduled collection events. Your town's Department of Public Works website is usually the best first stop for current info.

The Gray Zone Items — Just Ask
